Sometimes we are right in the middle of things before we look around and think, "is something wrong here?"
This can be the case with eating disorders. We were trying to be "healthier" by cutting out a meal here or there, or adding some extra workouts to "compensate" for some less healthy meals, and then you realise it's actually taken over your life.
So, how do we know if we need to take action?
Well, I'd say that if you're reading this, you probably have some concerns and it would be worth booking in to talk about your concerns. However, there's a simple screening questionnaire that is commonly used to figure out if you are at risk of an eating disorder.
The screening questionnaire is called the SCOFF questionnaire, which stands for:
S – Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full?
C – Do you worry you have lost Control over how much you eat?
O – Have you recently lost more than One stone (that's 6.35 kg for us Aussies) in a three-month period?
F – Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin?
F – Would you say Food dominates your life?
How many of these questions did you answer "yes" to?
If you answered "yes" to two or more of these, it's worth talking to your GP about your results, and booking in to see us for help and support in developing a healthier relationship with food.
We have eating disorder dietitians ready to help you in a number of clinics across WA. We have clinics in the City of Mandurah (at Lakelands), City of Wanneroo, and in East Perth, as well as our telehealth consults if you prefer to see us from the comfort of your own home.
